Bespoke Number Plates 101: Everything You Need to Know

Bespoke number plate printing is a fun and easy way to bring a more personal feel to your vehicle. That being said, a common misconception persists that the process of getting a bespoke number plate is complicated or difficult.

Today we’d like to dispel that misconception by talking about just how simple and easy it is to have a custom number plate printed and why you should consider one for your vehicle.

How To Get a Bespoke Number Plate

The first thing to know about custom number plate printing is that it comes in two varieties - show plates and road legal plates. As the names suggest show plates are only permitted to be used on private land but are perfect for displaying your car in style. Road legal plates, on the other hand, are your permanent car registration.

If you want a road-legal bespoke number plate you’ll need to start by purchasing your new registration from the government’s DVLA or from a private dealer. Once you have your V750 (certificate of entitlement) or V778 (retention document), you can bring it to us and we’ll take care of the rest.

You can upload your details on our site, selecting from a wide variety of choices from standard 2D plates to 3D and 4D Gel plates. Our site is easy to use, with a step by step process that will tell you everything we need to make your perfect number plate.

Fitting A Custom Number Plate

There are two easy methods for replacing your number plate. You can either screw the new number plate into place, being sure to get the holes in the correct positions, or else you can use adhesive strips. For more information on both of these methods as well as some useful tips, check out the how-to-fit guide on our website.

What Are The Legal Limitations of a Bespoke Number Plate?

As we’ve already discussed, there’s a strong distinction between show plates and road plates. When it comes to show plates, you can have pretty much anything you want - after all, they’re just for show.

Road legal plates, on the other hand, do need to conform to some basic guidelines however you’re not as limited as you might think. There is a common misconception that 3D Gel and 4D plates are no longer legal as UK road plates but this is not, in fact, the case.

That said, smoked/tinted plates are not considered road-legal as they can obscure the registration making it harder to read in some lights.
